Unlawful Internet Gambling Act 2006 (UIGEA)

What is it and how does it affect you?

In October of 2006, President George W. Bush passed a bill which prevents U.S. based banking institutions to 'knowingly transfer funds through gambling institutions deposited by either businesses or individuals.' In effect, this bill is supposed to enforce proper tax habits and reduce tax evasion associated with online gambling.

This affects both U.S. domestic customers and anyone associated with online gambling. For example, NETeller is a payment processor which is based in Canada. However, its owners were arrested when they were on US soil. Why? Because millions of U.S. citizens were using NETeller as a means to fund their gambling accounts.

This affects every U.S. player because, if you can't fund your online account, you can't gamble.

However, while there seems to be no respite for the U.S. gambler, there are still some means of funding your accounts!

Here you will find list of payment methods still available to U.S. based gaming customers.

Please note, as a result of UIGEA, this list is not exhaustive and you should find out the current gambling requirements by contacting your payment processor of choice.

More Reasons Why Online Gambling Has Come Under Attack

Since 9/11, the U.S. government has been tracking the use of online financial services to fund terrorist activities.

As a result of the Patriot Act, it forced many offshore and domestic banking institutions to disclose its business practices and/or modify the way financial institutions perform transactions.

This is the reason why many online financial services and gambling services require disclosure of the Social Security Number in order to receive checks and payments from online casinos.

The current UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Act of 2006) fell under the Safe Port Act.

This Safe Port Act was passed in order to 'improve maritime and cargo security through enhanced layered defenses, and for other purposes.'

It is the 'other purposes' that forged the UIGEA. Essentially, the U.S. government wanted a means to track the revenues from online legal or illegal gambling; the proceeds of which were tax free.

The UIGEA forced many payment processors to forego U.S. based players and the funding of their gambling accounts.

Such payment processors as NETeller were ordered to pay millions in fines. Other payment processors fell and some went out of business (Central Coin) while the remainder are not servicing U.S. gambling patrons.

The list of states that have no issues with gambling are funding their state budgets with the revenues generated from gambling.

The states that have online gambling restrictions have state lotteries, casinos and race tracks. These aren't considered illegal forms of betting.
